Duleek 1-8 Borora Jnrs
U13s NECSL Division 2
You know it's been a good day when you can't remember if you scored eight or nine goals.
Borora Jnrs started their first season on a full pitch in fine style away to Duleek, rattling in eight (or was it 9?) goals.
In addition to the goals, there were also welcome debuts for new recruits Daniel O'Sullivan and Oisin Campbell.
Borora started the game well. However, despite the goals being twice as big as they were last season, noone seemed to be able to hit the target, causing the coaches to age 10 years in 10 minutes.
Thankfully, it wasn't too long before Danny Gorman settled the nerves and decelerated the ageing process. Wide on the left, he was played in by Bobby Kavanagh and ran in to the box putting it past the keeper.
Messy bedrooms
The front three of Gorman, James McCabe and Henry Pratt eventually found their shooting boots (buried under a pile of dirty clothes in their messy bedrooms no doubt) and by the end of the first half, the score was 5-0 with Gorman and Pratt netting and McCabe registering a first half hatrick.
Goal of the game came early in the second half. Captain Fionn Nulty was moved to striker with McCabe going in goal. Nulty latched onto McCabe's goal kick, raced clear of the defence and blootered the ball into the top corner. Two (or maybe three?) goals followed, scored by Gorman and Pratt with some fantastic approach play from Logan Wilson and Louis Redmond who were both unlucky not to get on the score sheet themselves.
In midfield, Dan White and Oisin Campbell, like the world's worst exorcist, made sure Borora held on to possession with Campbell playing the pass of the game to put Wilson through on goal.
Donkeys
But it was in defence that Borora excelled. New centre-back pairing, Oisin Gardiner and Daniel O'Sullivan (aka the Twin Towers), were as stubborn as a donkey crossed with Roy Keane, while Sean Gaynor, Patrick Cussen and Jayden Sherlock made sure, like a weird three headed version of Gandalf, that Duleek players shall not pass (except for that moment when one of the defenders bundled over a Duleek player in the box for a nailed-on penalty.
A special mention to Oran McKenna who played the first half in goal and the second half all over the pitch as a defensive midfielder.
There will be tougher tests ahead for this Borora team, especially as they have gone up to Division 2. However, the NECSL bureaucrats often redraw the leagues after the first four games just in case any teams are too strong or weak for their division. So the trick is not to draw their attention with any eye catching scorelines in those opening games. What's that? 8-1?? Oh…
