Youths Fitzgerald Leddy Cup:
Slane Wanderers 3-3 Borora AET (Borora win 4-3 on pens)
We travelled to Slane for the first round of the cup as underdogs, facing a side two divisions above us. The hosts dominated the early stages but Adam Hannigan put us in front after 15 minutes, slotting home an inch-perfect Lewis Wallace cross.
Borora held our lead until the half-hour mark when a clearly offside goal (no VAR in the Fitzgerald Leddy Cup, sadly) levelled for Slane. They grabbed another two before the break, but our lads knew there was still something in this game.
Twenty minutes into the second half, Wallace grabbed a deserved goal himself, curling it home off the inside of the post. Ten minutes later, Jayden Sherlock took advantage of a defensive mix-up to round the keeper and bring it to extra-time. No further goals brought us to penalties, where stand-in keeper Joseph McGarry - assured all night - stopped one and watched Slane’s final penalty of their five go wide. Onto the next round. Every one of the 15 players put in some shift, proud of them all.
