U15 Division 2
Drogheda Marsh Crescent v Borora Juniors
Borora Juniors travelled to Drogheda Marsh Crescent for the first game of the new season. Borora flew out of the traps on a heavy tight pitch, snapping into the challenges and pressing and were rewarded for their fast high press start when Daniel Gilsenan harried the defence and although got a fortunate ricochet, kept driving towards goal. He was slightly fortunate when a 1-2 with the keeper fell kindly and he poked it past him and the ball rolled into the empty net. A great start and the away side took the lead after only 5 minutes. Borora should have extended the advantage when some tricky play down the right from Rogan almost doubled the lead with his shot sliding just wide of the keepers left post.
The home side began to get a foot hold in the game and were soon back on level terms when they won a corner and what looked to be an innocuous floated corner was met by the attacker and he headed home with the Borora defence static looking on.
Borora wasted another couple of chances before half time with the home defence having a charmed morning.
The second half started in much the same fashion as the first with Borora pressing and were rewarded for the high press again when intercepting inside the home sides half and Rogan strode clear and with his usual composure, slotted the ball past the oncoming keeper to restore a well deserved lead. The game became a bit scrappy after that and this appeared to suit the home side.
They were on the right side of some 50/50 decisions and soon levelled again via a fortunate scramble and a wicked bounce that left the Borora keeper stranded and the ball trickled into the empty net.
The away side would not lay down and wrestled back control with only 10 minutes remaining when a deftly weighted pass from midfield saw Rogan stride clear again and he finished with aplomb sliding the ball calmly past the Drogheda keeper. Surely that was enough to win the match.
Another 50/50 decision went the home sides way and a free kick was awarded about 25 yards from goal and the away side, playing without a recognised keeper didn’t get organised in time for the free to be taken and curled into the net, leaving Oisin Gilsenan rooted in the net.
The points looked destined to be shared when another soft looking freekick just inside Borora half was awarded to Drogheda and the resulting kick rebounded before being poked into the away sides net with what was just about the last kick of the match.
The away side can feel hard done by with the result but can be confident for the season ahead.
A great all round team performance but special mention to McGovern and of course Gilsenan and Rogan who both had their scoring boots on.
