Borora Juniors v Trim Celtic FC
Borora Juniors welcomed Trim Celtic FC in a Round of 16 Shield match in Moynalty in the blistering late summer sunshine.
Borora started the brighter side, pressing high and putting some great passing moves together in the opening 15 minutes until Delaney had to be replaced due to a back injury. He was replaced by the lively, yet composed McKenna. Borora deservedly took the lead when the high pressing paid off with Gilsenan charging down the keepers clearance before squaring for Brunton to stroke the ball into the empty net. It was no more than the home side deserved. Borora continued to press and were unfortunate not to double their lead just before half time when the keeper spilled a shot but just pounced on the rebound before the attackers could react.
Half time 1-0.
It was the visitors turn to push at the start of the second half with McCabe sweeping superbly for the ball over the top and he made a couple of impressive saves before the visitors pulled level about 10 minutes into the second half. The game was beautifully poised at this point leading into a much needed water break.
Shortly after, the impressive McKenna had to be replaced with a knock to his ankle and this turned the game.
The visitors began to take control of the game and took the lead shortly after, when the striker got goal side of the defence and hit a fierce shot which McCabe could only parry into the corner of his net.
The home side then lost Connell to injury and this proved to be even more costly as he had marshalled his defence superbly. Straight after, the away side again broke the high line and slotted home their 3rd to extend the advantage.
The home side continued to switch things in the intense heat and were rewarded for their efforts when the squared ball reached Pratt at the back post to smash it home. 3-2 to the visitors.
Trim once again stretched their advantage when the flagging defence were again caught high immediately from the restart and restored their 2 goal advantage with a cool finish across teh keeper.
Borora never gave up the fight and took the game to Trim once again and were unfortunate not to find the net again when a scramble in the visitors 6 yard box but the effort was finally hacked clear. The ball went up the other end straight from this clearance and a speculative cross was met by the tall visiting attacker and his header popped up and over the outstretched arms of the Borora keeper.
The game fizzled out in the final few minutes as players began to suffer in the heat and the ref blew the final whistle, much to the delight of the visiting team.
James McCabe shone for Borora between the sticks along with Daniel Gilsenan, Frankie McIlhern and the ever impressive Kyle Brunton. Special mention on an impressive match before injury from Oran McKenna.
